The scientific programme and paper selection were the responsibility of the
International Programme Committee appointed by the board of the EPS
Plasma Physics Division. This committee selected 14 invited plenary
and 42 invited parallel talks, in addition to the Hannes Alfvén
prize winner presentation. 96 papers were also presented as oral
presentations. The responsibility for the parallel sessions were assigned to
sub-committees chaired by:
Emilia Solano (Magnetic Confinement Fusion)
Juergen Meyer-ter-Vehn (Beam Plasmas and Inertial Fusion)
Jean-Luc Dorier (Dusty and Low Temperature Plasmas)
Richard Dendy (Basic Plasma Physics and Astrophysics).
This volume of the series Europhysics Conference Abstracts comprises the list of contributed papers, oral and poster, that were submitted via the ELISE engine. As in the past, invited papers will be published in a special issue of Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. A copy will be posted to each registered delegate.
The 31st EPS Conference brought together over 800 plasma physicists from 49 countries.
The conference continued the series of European Physical Society (EPS) conferences on plasma physics and fusion research. For the 2004 conference, the science of laser-plasma interaction and inertial confinement fusion, as well as dusty and low temperature plasmas, had substantially greater prominence than previously. To ensure fair coverage of more traditional topics, the meeting broke up into parallel sessions after the morning coffee break.
This method of publication was made
available by the ELISE conference submission program developed
at the Centre de Recherches en Physique des Plasmas (CRPP)
at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)
by Ch. Nieswand and B.P. Duval.
For this conference it was operated by B.P.Duval for both the abstract submission process and
the oral and poster contribution submissions. This represents the first conference where the complete
contribution path was handled electronically including collation and distribution to the Programme Committee.

Final editing and CD-ROM production was carried out by the Local Organising Committee using the submissions processed by ELISE.
