Preface of the Editors
The 35th European Physical Society (EPS) Conference on
Plasma Physics was held in Hersonissos, Crete, Greece, at the Creta Maris
Conference Centre from 9th to 13th of June,2008.
The scientific programme of the conference and the selection of papers
were the responsibility of the international Programme Committee
appointed by the board of the EPS Plasma Physics Division. This
committee selected 14 invited plenary talks and 68 invited parallel
talks. The PC also selected 65 contributed orals and 648 posters for presentation.
The 35th EPS Conference brought together 742 plasma physicists
from 40 countries.
The Conference Programme had three additionally sessions : "Education in Plasmas" chaired
by N. Lopes Cardoso, "ITER" chaired by Jo Lister, and "Women in
Physics" chaired by S. Jacquemot.
This year's Hannes Alfvén prize was awarded to Prof. Liu Chen (University of
California, Irvine, USA), who gave a talk entitled "Alfvén Waves: A
Journey between Space and Fusion Plasmas".
The Plasma Physics Division of the EPS sponsored the EPS PPD PhD
Research Award that recognizes exceptional quality of work carried out
by young physicists as part of their PhD research in any area of plasma
physics. The prize was awarded to three students: Louise Willingale (UK), Ivo Classen (NL) and Bredan Dromey
(IRL).
The 2008 Plasma Physics Innovation Award was awarded to
John Allen and Beatrice Annaratone
"... for the
development of a novel RF plasma reactor, based on the phenomenon of plasma-sheath resonance.
Extensive experimental and theoretical work led to the design and production of a material
proccessing reactor, withh single or dual frequencies , to produce denser plasma at low pressure."
For the fourth time, Professor Sanae-I Itoh, in agreement with the
conference organisers, has offered the Itoh Project Prize in Plasma Turbulence to students presenting a poster at the conference. The prize was awarded to Stella Oldenbuerger,
PhD student from Nancy University, France ("Investigation of cross-field
transport in a linear magnetized plasma").
She won the opportunity to visit Kyushu University, Japan
for one week, including flight tickets and living expenses.
The invited papers have been refereed by members of the Programme Committee
and invited experienced scientists. The proceedings will be published in December
2008 in a special issue of the journal Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion.
A copy will be sent to each participant that requested one with the registration
and paid the correct fee. All participants who did not request a copy yet wish one
are encouraged to contact the LOC (valid only whilst copies are available).
The ELISE conference submission program was developed at the Centre
des Recherches en Physique des Plasmas (CRPP) at the Ecole Polytechnique
Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) by Ch. Nieswand and B.P. Duval.
For this conference it was operated by B.P. Duval for both the abstract
submission process and the oral and poster contribution submissions.
Further information on the operation of ELISE for this conference is
available in [About the CDRom],
Final editing and CD-ROM production was carried out by the
Local Organising Committee using the submissions processed by ELISE.
