The 36th European
Physical Society (EPS) Conference on Plasma Physics was held in Sofia,
Bulgaria, at the National Palace of Culture from
29th of June to the 3rd
of July, 2009.
The scientific programme of the conference and the selection of papers
were the responsibility of
the international Programme Committee appointed by the board
of the EPS Plasma Physics Division. This committee selected
15 invited plenary talks and 69 invited
parallel talks. The PC also selected 70 contributed orals
and 494 posters for presentation.
The 36th
EPS Conference brought together 532
plasma physicists
from 38 countries. The Conference Programme included four regular
sessions: Magnetic Confinement Fusion; Beam Plasmas and Inertial
Fusion; Dusty and Low Temperature Plasmas; Basic Plasmas and Space and
Astrophysical Plasmas.
The Conference Programme had three additionally sessions: "ITER"
chaired by Carlos Hidalgo and Piero
Martin, "Education in Plasmas" chaired by Piero Martin, and "Women in
Physics" chaired by Elizabeth Rachlew.
Two satellite meetings were organized during the 36th EPS Conference on Plasma Physics:
The 2nd International Workshop on Plasmas for Environmental Issues took place on the conference site, on the afternoons of 2nd and 3rd July. The sessions were chaired by Elena Tatarova and Vasco Guerra.
EFTSOMP2009
–
Workshop on Electric Fields, Turbulence and Self-Organisation in
Magnetized
Plasmas took place on 6th and 7th
July 2009 in Sofia, Bulgaria at the Hilton Sofia Hotel.
This year's Hannes Alfvén prize was awarded to Prof.
Jürgen
Meyer-ter-Vehn (Max Plank Institute of Quantum Optics),
who gave a talk entitled "Basic studies into high power laser plasmas:
from laser fusion to laser accelerators".
The 2009 Plasma Physics Innovation Award was awarded to Prof. Emmanuel Marode (Laboratoire de Physique des Gaz et des Plasmas, Université Paris-Sud 11) for “research which has demonstrably led to robust innovative applications or important effects on society”. Prof. Marode gave a talk entitled “Physics and applications of atmospheric non thermal air plasma with reference to environment”.
The Plasma Physics Division of the EPS sponsored the EPS PPD PhD Research Award that recognizes exceptional quality of work carried out by young physicists as part of their PhD research in any area of plasma physics. The prize was awarded to three students: Cedric Thaury (FR), Ian Chapman (UK), Tilman Lunt (GER).
For the fifth time, Professor Sanae-I Itoh, in agreement with the conference organisers, has offered the Itoh Project Prize in Plasma Turbulence to students presenting a poster at the conference. The prize was awarded to Tim Happel from EURATOM-CIEMAT who won the opportunity to visit Kyushu University, Japan for one week, including flight tickets and living expenses.
The invited papers have been refereed by members of the Programme Committee and invited experienced scientists. The proceedings will be published in December 2009 in a special issue of the journal Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. A copy will be sent to each participant that requested one with the registration and paid the correct fee. All participants who did not request a copy yet still wish one are encouraged to contact the LOC (valid only whilst copies are available).
The ELISE conference submission program was developed at the Centre des Recherches en Physique des Plasmas (CRPP) at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) by Ch. Nieswand and B.P. Duval.
For this conference it was operated by B.P. Duval for both the abstract submission process and the oral and poster contribution submissions. Further information on the operation of ELISE for this conference is available in [About the CDRom]
Final editing and CD-ROM production was carried out by the Local Organising Committee using the submissions processed by ELISE.
